FlexWorld: An Introductory Episode

In this introduction to the podcast, the two hosts are here to discuss the mission of the show and what the audience can expect in the future. In our new podcast, hosts Colin Daymude and Mike Everts will be talking with industry leaders about the challenges of flexible and hybrid work.

Today, many companies struggle with traditional ideas like working from the office. Without a more flexible perspective, these companies will lose their competitive edge to attract the best talent and, as a result — develop the best products.

Hear our first episode as our hosts talk about:

  • The biggest challenge facing the industry today

  • The types of conversations had on the show

The biggest challenge facing companies today:

Remote or hybrid work today is a common situation for many workers. But rewind just a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic began, there were plenty of CEOs under the impression that a non-traditional work model would never gain traction. The most revolutionary incident of the future of work seemed to be when Goldman Sachs announced that they were moving to business casual in early 2020.

Looking to the present, business leaders continue to struggle with change management. An issue that Colin and Michael consider the biggest challenge in the industry — Leaders, whether they consider themselves a traditionalist or innovator, have taken a firm stance.

The hard lesson: The companies that don’t change won’t remain competitive.

Employees have seen the benefits of remote or hybrid work and will be hard-pressed to go back to a kind of work that holds less than an optimum work-life balance. Especially combined with the new opportunities made available to them through remote work.

Incentives to return to the office

But is the office such a bad place to be? Not so much if you are one of the leaders with an inherently flexible schedule but for the rank and file and even line managers, the traditional workplace 8-5 routine has run its course.

What the office cannot be is the same experience that employees are having at home: If you wake up, shower, and drive to the office only to make Zoom calls all day, the process is broken.

“Offices need to give the benefits of in-person work, such as collaboration spaces where you could do special collaboration with other people at the office.” — Michael Everts

Getting the right people in a room together creates a great opportunity to build relationships and increase productivity; but it has to be done correctly and in-line with the new preference for a hybrid work model.

Who the podcast is for

In an effort to help the audience better understand how to navigate a hybrid workplace environment, the show’s purpose is to bring employees, tech experts, and managers from successful hybrid workplaces to share what went right, wrong, and what they’re still working on to create the ideal work environment.

As far as we’ve come with hybrid work in the past couple years, we still have a long way to go. Consulting those that have already dealt with these challenges is the best way to get a jumpstart for the audience’s businesses.

“Companies don’t have a roadmap to hybrid work, even though employees have been working remotely for a long time.” — Colin Daymude

Leaders know that they’re in the middle of a workplace revolution. Making sure they have the right tools to make the change is crucial to success.

The types of conversations had on the show

If there was one word to describe the kinds of conversations this podcast will have, it would be unfiltered.

The successes and failures of transitioning to hybrid work are not always glamorous. The successes can have the ugliest failures before finally coming out on top; and the failures could’ve quickly followed success that business leaders thought would last.

One such supposed failure turned to success: In a survey, business leaders’ perception was that remote work would lead to a decrease in productivity. When the results came back, not only were employees productive, but more productive than ever before.

Only by having these conversations can the audience truly understand how to bridge the gap between employee and employer in the hybrid workspace future.

“It’s not a one-sided situation, employees are making some serious demands about how they want to work. But managers have needs also; there’s this huge disconnect.” — Colin Daymude
